Frequently Asked Questions

General Questions

To make your experience as smooth as possible, we recommend bringing your prescription from your physician, any relevant insurance information, and, if you’d like, a favorite scarf, hat, or inspiration photo. This helps us tailor the fitting to your unique style and needs.

While walk-ins are welcome for shopping in the boutique, we encourage you to make an appointment for wig fittings, prostheses, or bras to ensure you have dedicated private time with one of our specialists. Appointments allow us to provide you with the personal care you deserve, and they serve as documentation for fittings, which are required to bill insurance.

Our Products & Fittings

Choosing a wig is a personal experience, and we’re here to help you find the one that feels right for you.

  • Synthetic wigs are known for being low-maintenance and hold their style beautifully. They offer a natural look and feel at a more accessible price point. It’s important to remember they are sensitive to heat, so styling tools like blow dryers or curling irons should be avoided.
  • Human hair wigs provide the most natural look and feel, as they can be styled, colored, and treated just like your own hair. They are wonderfully lightweight and breathable, offering great comfort.
Proper care extends the life and beauty of your wig. We recommend gently washing it with wig-safe products, storing it on a wig stand when not in use, and avoiding excessive brushing. Our team is happy to share personalized tips and walk you through the steps.

Absolutely. We’re here to support you throughout your journey. If you’d like to change up your style, or if your wig needs a little refresh or adjustment, you’re welcome to bring it back to us.

We reserve this time just for you. A dedicated 60-minute appointment ensures you have unhurried, personal time with one of our certified fitters. This allows us to listen to your needs, explore different styles of wigs or bras, and make sure you find a solution that is not only beautiful but also perfectly comfortable. It’s all about helping you make an informed decision without any pressure.

A monofilament top is a special feature in some of our wigs. It’s a soft, translucent mesh panel at the crown of the wig where each hair is individually tied. This thoughtful design creates the appearance of natural hair growth from the scalp, offering a realistic look.

Not at all. Hair loss, or alopecia, can be part of many different journeys and affects people of all ages. For some, a wig is a wonderful solution. For others, a simple clip-in hairpiece adds just the right amount of volume or coverage. We are here to support anyone seeking to find confidence in their look.

Cold Cap Therapy

Every person and treatment journey is unique. Our compassionate team is available to discuss whether cold cap therapy might be a good fit for you, answer your questions, and walk you through what to expect so you can make an informed choice.

We want you to feel as prepared as possible for your cold cap therapy sessions. We’ll provide you with everything needed and share practical tips for each session–from bringing cozy layers, to managing the process, to feeling supported throughout. We also provide on-site training at your first chemotherapy infusion.

Lymphedema

Compression garments usually need to be replaced every 6 months because they lose their stretch with regular use and washing. We recommend having at least two garments so you can wear one while washing the other. We’ll work with your lymphedema therapist to ensure you get the appropriate products to help provide relief.

Most insurance plans, including Medicare, cover compression garments when your doctor prescribes them for lymphedema. At Over My Head Boutique, we’re experienced with insurance companies and will help you understand your coverage and file claims. You’ll need a prescription from your doctor, and our staff will guide you through the process to reduce your costs.

Your Treatment Journey

This experience is unique to each person. In general, hair loss often begins about 14 to 16 days after the first chemotherapy treatment. Remember, we are here to help you prepare and find solutions that will bring you comfort and confidence during this time.

It’s possible, but it doesn’t happen to everyone. The reassuring news is that eyebrows and lashes are often the last to go and the first to return. A wig with soft bangs can be a lovely way to frame your face and camouflage any loss, while also helping to protect your eyes.  We also carry various products to help draw on eyebrows, as well as magnetic false lashes.

Insurance & Coverage

Yes, absolutely. The Women’s Health Care Act of 1998 requires health insurance companies, including Medicare, to cover medically necessary prostheses and garments following any breast cancer surgery. We can help you understand what your plan covers.

Of course. We want to make this process as simple as possible for you. Over My Head is a Medicare-validated provider and is in-network with most private insurance plans. Please note that we are not Medicaid providers. All you need is a prescription from your doctor, and we can handle the rest, including verifying your coverage. Please feel free to call us with any specific questions.

Medicare will typically cover 80% of the cost for necessary replacement bras (up to 12 per year) and one prosthesis every two years (or two for a bilateral surgery). If you have secondary insurance, it may cover the remaining 20%.

Once your surgeon gives you a prescription (usually about four to six weeks after your operation), you can schedule a private fitting with us. Our Certified Mastectomy Fitters are experts in finding the most comfortable and symmetrical solutions to help you feel like yourself again. These products are billable to insurance after any breast cancer surgery, whether or not you have had or plan to have reconstruction.
